"You're either part of the problem, or part of the solution." ―Bob Marley These are words that have always stuck with me since I first heard them. It is easy to be a part of the problem when you are stuck in your ways, waiting for someone else to make things right. But if something makes you feel uncomfortable, it's time for you to take action. Change can be difficult but it is always worth it. And one step at a time, by learning more about American history and culture through movies or television shows I never even knew existed, I could better understand how people felt during this period in our nation's history and through their work create change myself. And so I decided to put pen to paper and take this journey. I began to write down the events, people, and experiences in American history that made me feel uncomfortable. It wasn't all history either. I included song lyrics that made me think about how things used to be, or current events that made me feel uncomfortable. The events where I felt like someone was trying to keep something wrong from me, or how people were trying to keep something wrong out of the news. The point is it all came together in the end–a book of words about my feelings (and yours!) about American History. American Pie is a series of books that will open the eyes of students to history “they” want you to forget. It is intended for an audience of students ages 14–18, but the material is presented in an age appropriate manner so it can also be read by younger people. The series will consist of three books: A People’s History, Civil Rights, and Hip Hop Culture in America. Each book will cover three time periods in American history: 1607-1865, 1865-1910, and 1910-present. A People's History - This book covers the early years of America when European settlers came to claim Native lands for their own. It will cover the concepts of Manifest Destiny, Civil War, Colonialism, and Slavery. Civil Rights - This book covers the time period from 1865-1910 during which America experienced two major waves of change. The first wave was from 1865-1896, a period of civil rights issues concerning African Americans and Native Americans. The second wave was from 1896 to 1910 during which time women started to organize themselves politically and made their presence known in politics. It will cover the concepts of Reconstruction, Women's suffrage movement, Jim Crow laws, Jim Crowe laws and lynching. Hip Hop Culture - This book will cover the time period from 1910-present, during which time Hip Hop was officially recognized as a cultural movement. It will cover the concepts of Rap Music, Hip Hop Fashion, Gangs and Street Life. The following are some people whose work is used in this series: "American Pie" was recognized with an Excellence Award at the New York City Black Literary Awards in 2011.
